Avoid Long Lines and
Lengthy Wait Times
From the middle of May to the middle of August are the very busiest 3 months in all drivers' license offices. School is out but driver's education is going. In addition to basic renewals, we process about 35,000 kids wanting to get their first license or instruction permit every year, and most of them apply during this time and in the larger offices. These larger offices are open 7am to 5:45pm Tuesday through Friday, and the best time to visit one of them is from 7am to 10am. Wednesday and Thursday are the days least busy. There isn't a good time to visit one of these offices on Tuesday or Friday, but if you must, earlier is better.
An Alternative to waiting in lines - Most of the larger offices have smaller, less busy offices located in the surrounding counties that can accommodate basic transactions, such as a driver's license renewal or replacement.
For Mission and Olathe, we have the Miami County Treasurer located less than 40 miles south in Paola. They offer renewal and replacements of non-commercial driver's licenses and ID cards and are open Monday thru Friday from 8 to 4:30.
For Topeka, we have the Osage County Treasurer located less than 30 miles to the south in Lyndon and the Jackson County Treasurer located less than 30 miles to the north in Holton. They offer renewal and replacements of non-commercial driver's licenses and ID cards and are open Tuesday thru Friday from 8 to 4:30.
For Wichita, we have the Sumner County Treasurer located less than 40 miles
to the south in Wellington. They offer renewal and replacements of non-commercial
driver's licenses and ID cards and are open Monday thru Friday from 8:30 to 4:30.
We also have the Butler County Treasurer located less than 40 miles to the east in
El Dorado and the Harvey County Treasurer located less than 30 miles to the north
in Newton. They offer renewal and replacements of non-commercial driver's licenses
and ID cards and are open Monday thru Friday from 8 to 4:30.
