Kansas Conforms to IRS Filing Deadline

(TOPEKA, KS) -- The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has extended the 2006 income tax filing deadline to Tuesday, April 17, 2007 giving taxpayers around the country an extra two days to file their 2006 federal tax returns and pay taxes owed.

“Kansas will be conforming with the extended IRS deadline,” reports Steve Stotts, Director of Taxation, Kansas Department of Revenue. The date for filing State income tax returns is being extended to match the federal due date.

The two-day extension is because April 15, the usual tax day, falls on a Sunday this year and April 16 is Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in the District of Columbia. The IRS said holidays observed in the nation's capital have an impact nationwide.

Emancipation Day is not a legal holiday in the State of Kansas, therefore The Kansas Department of Revenue Office will be open on April 16, 2007 and ready to assist last minute tax filers.

In 2008 taxpayers will again face the usual April 15 deadline.
