International Driver's License Scam
A recent e-mail promotion involving Internet sale of driver's licenses for those experiencing problems with revocation, suspension, or high insurance rates on their current licenses has been exposed as a scam. This mass solicitation suggests via e-mail, that those experiencing problems securing a driver's license simply apply through their agency to receive an international driver's license and be free and clear of prior obstacles to driving a motor vehicle. The scam intends to get around the law by listing the license from a foreign address instead of the operator's true home address. Unbeknownst to the applicant, if pulled over, the driver's address listed on the license will differ from the vehicle's registration, and lying to a law enforcement officer about your place of residency is considered a crime. Not only that, but the scheme is suspected to be implicating a real International Driving License or Permit, which is truly only issued to a valid holder of a driver's license and has to be used in conjunction with that license when operating a car in a foreign country. These international driving permits are very clearly described in International law as a document that cannot be used to operate a vehicle in lieu of a driver's license. It should be reinforced that no licenses purchased on the Internet are legal driving permits for U.S. citizens residing in the U.S.
